300zx convertible is a sports car produced by Nissan. The predecessor to 300zx convertible was Nissan 280zx. And its sucessor was Nissan 350z. It is also known as fairlady Z in markets of Japan. It comprises of third and fourth generation lined up Z cars which are given the chassis designation of Z31 and Z32. The name of 300zx came from the model name 240Z assigned to the earlier model by the President of Nissan Motors, "Mr. Yutaka Katmaya". Then X was added to its name because it was added in its predecessor model Nissan 280zx. The meaning of adding "X" was to reflect the luxury factor. The same name 300zx was used almost in all the markets but in the home market, Japan it was known with the name "fairlady Z". It was produced at Hiratsuka, Kangawa, Japan. Its tramissions are 5 - speed manual and 4 - speed automatic. It has FR layout.

From the two models of 300zx convertible: Z31 and Z32, Z31 had picked up the market well compared to the Z32. Z31 ended up with around 100000 units more sale than what did Z32 do. Z31 and Z32 models were with the capacity of 3.0 litres. Both had almost same features and same displacement, same turbocharged engine but then too when the output was measured the output of Z32 was found far superior than Z31. Z31 as said earlier was designed after Nissan 280zx and when it was being designed and was to arrive for launch, the unit was about to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, so it was the clear intention of the management to come out with extra ordinary model and give the feel and impression of luxury through this model on the 50th anniversary of the group. Later to it came the model Z32 where styling was totally redesigned and wider footprints were added on and more curves were considered as a part of design. And when it released the result was that it was regarded as a coefficent to the model Z31.

In 1990, 300zx convertible was regarded as "Import car of the year" by the Motor Trend. It was also stated by the Motor Trend that 300zx convertible falls in the top 10 list when it comes to rating cars by their performance. Moreover by the automobile magazine honours it was given the title "Design of the Year". And the automobile magazine honours also gave the title of "All Stars" to this model.
